A Glimpse Into 100Kraft’s Interior Design Success Story

Decision Maker: Hello, Mr. Ravi, Thank you for taking the time to join us today. How would you describe your early years and educational background?

Ravi Roshan: Absolutely, I’d be delighted to. My educational path might seem a bit unconventional for someone in the interior design industry. I pursued a B.Tech. in Computer Science, a field seemingly unrelated to interiors. However, my career took a fascinating turn as I ventured into sales and marketing roles with renowned companies like IBM and ITC. This journey exposed me to the intricacies of business development, customer behaviour, and market dynamics. Despite my IT background, I ventured into entrepreneurship around 2012, setting the stage for the birth of 100Krafts.

Decision Maker:  What was your entrepreneurial journey like, in a nutshell?

Ravi Roshan: Absolutely. My entrepreneurial journey spans nearly a decade and a half. Initially, I had uncertainties about whether I could sustain and flourish. Seeking advice from mentors and peers, some suggested I give it a year or so, while my family and a few friends offered unwavering support. Recognising a huge gap in the interior industry’s delivery and integrity aspects, I was determined to fill it.

In the early days, I faced challenges due to my IT background and the scepticism it garnered from those within the interior world. The idea that someone with my background could navigate this industry was met with doubt. Around 2013, we began making strides with successful deals, and by 2014, we were gaining traction and assembling a capable team. While the journey was difficult, my diverse sales and marketing background in sectors like telecom, IT, and retail equipped me to overcome the interior industry’s challenges.

Acknowledgment from respected media outlets like the Economic Times, the Hindu, and the Deccan Chronicle, in 2014 bolstered our credibility, underscoring the value of our business model. Through steadfast resolve, strategic planning, and a strong commitment to innovation, we established a presence in both the B2B and B2C segments.

Decision Maker: Can you give us insights into the major offerings of the company? And, how does the company support people with its offerings and services?

Ravi Roshan: Certainly. The idea behind 100Krafts was sparked by a personal experience. When I undertook the task of getting the interiors of my own properties done, I encountered a series of challenges. The lack of professionalism, supply chain issues, and fragmented nature of the interior design industry intrigued me. I saw an opportunity to address these gaps and create positive change.

Thus, in 2013, 100Krafts was officially launched with a strong focus on providing end-to-end interior services. What truly sets us apart is our continuous commitment to delivering highly customised projects. Whether it’s crafting intricate furniture pieces with traditional carvings or adding unique design sketches, we bring together a diverse team of specialists to create personalised solutions that resonate with our clients.

Decision Maker: Who are your clients? How do you keep your clients happy and satisfied?

Ravi Roshan: Customer satisfaction forms the very foundation of our business model. We primarily cater to retail and household clients, with a sprinkling of commercial projects. Our approach involves detailed monitoring of our Customer Happiness Index, which allows us to maintain open lines of communication with our clients through a dedicated CRM team. This approach enables us to gain a deep understanding of our clients’ perspectives, needs, and challenges, thus facilitating a truly personalised experience.

It’s worth noting that my partner, Rimjhim, plays a crucial role in this process. By consistently delivering customer-centric services and seamlessly integrating our offerings, we’ve been able to create a positive impact and generate remarkable responses from our clients.

Decision Maker: That’s commendable. What was your moment of epiphany that set you on the path of what you do today?

Ravi Roshan: The pivotal moment for me was around 2010, when I undertook the task of getting the interiors of my properties done. This experience opened my eyes to the challenges within the industry—challenges like the lack of integrity and professionalism, and the fragmented nature of services.

Drawing from my experience at IBM, where processes and integration were integral, I realised that there was a significant gap in the interior design sector. This realisation ignited the spark to create a company that would prioritise integrity, professionalism, and customer delight. Thus, 100Krafts was born, with a vision to reshape and elevate the interior design experience.

Decision Maker: What makes your company stand out in the market?

Ravi Roshan: The true differentiator for 100Krafts lies in our unwavering commitment to providing personalised and highly customised interior solutions. We delve beyond the surface, investing time to understand not only our clients’ preferences but also their lifestyle, cultural nuances, and the emotional elements tied to each project.

Whether it’s the incorporation of unique artwork on a wardrobe or intricate woodwork, our integrated ecosystem brings together a team of diverse specialists. This holistic approach allows us to seamlessly create personalised designs that resonate with our clients on a profound level. Additionally, our hybrid model caters to both modular and custom designs, offering a comprehensive range of services. Our emphasis on infusing each project with an emotional narrative truly sets us apart in the market.

Decision Maker: What were some of the challenges you faced when breaking into entrepreneurship?

Ravi Roshan: Certainly, breaking into the entrepreneurial sphere presented a myriad of challenges, each contributing to valuable learning experiences. Among these hurdles, the scepticism and reluctance of industry professionals due to my unconventional background were prominent. Many designers and architects hesitated to collaborate, questioning my ability to comprehend and fulfil their expectations.

Moreover, the initial struggle to secure projects and generate revenue was a major challenge in entering a competitive market. Overcoming this required innovative strategies, unyielding perseverance, and the establishment of trust among clients and stakeholders. Simultaneously, constructing a capable team and adeptly managing the multifaceted aspects of the interior business posed their own set of trials.

However, these challenges served as catalysts for my determination to succeed. They propelled me to think creatively, embrace continuous learning, and lay a solid foundation for 100Krafts. Gradually, our efforts bore fruit as we gained recognition, earned the respect of industry professionals, and carved a distinctive identity for ourselves in both the B2B and B2C realms.

Decision Maker: That’s truly remarkable. What would you consider the most momentous accomplishment of your career?

Ravi Roshan: Amidst the myriad of achievements, one that stands out is the unwavering dedication of my team. We’ve succeeded in cultivating a team culture characterised by a strong commitment to our vision, which is reflected in our low attrition rates. Witnessing the satisfaction of our clients and the transformative impact our work has on their lives is another major accomplishment that I take immense pride in. It’s incredibly gratifying to see how the consistent performance and dedication of our team have shaped the ethos and reputation of our company.

Decision Maker: Who are the people you draw inspiration from—your role models?

Ravi Roshan: Inspiration is drawn from various facets of my life. First and foremost, my family members, including my mother, mother-in-law, daughter, and wife, inspire me with their work ethic and remarkable success stories.

Within my professional sphere, I’m deeply inspired by the commitment and dedication of my team members, ranging from seasoned professionals to emerging talents. Additionally, leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, business stalwarts like Ratan Tata and Narayana Murthy, and the individuals who played pivotal roles in the development of vaccines during the pandemic have left an indelible mark on my journey. I also find inspiration in books and various sources of knowledge that I engage with regularly.

Decision Maker:  What is your definition of success?

Ravi Roshan: Success, to me, encompasses a multifaceted perspective. It goes beyond personal achievements and extends to the impact I have on the lives of those connected to my ecosystem. Contributing positively to society, empowering my team members, and nurturing a community of entrepreneurs are the cornerstones of success. It’s the satisfaction of knowing that our efforts contribute positively to the lives of our team, clients, and society as a whole. Success, in my view, is about leaving behind a legacy of growth, positive change, and enduring relationships.

Decision Maker: Your definition of success is truly profound. What fuels you to do what you do every day?

Ravi Roshan: Beyond personal fulfilment, my passion is fueled by the desire to create a ripple effect of entrepreneurship within our ecosystem. Witnessing the dedication and commitment of my team, I aim to replicate this culture of excellence among budding entrepreneurs. Through mentorship, guidance, and a well-established framework, I aspire to simplify their journey and empower them to achieve success.

Moreover, the satisfaction of adding value to families, society, and the industry as a whole serves as a continuous wellspring of motivation. The prospect of expanding our reach and nurturing the next generation of leaders keeps my drive alive and intensifies my commitment to contributing positively.

Decision Maker: Are there any forthcoming plans or initiatives you’d like to share with us?

Ravi Roshan: Certainly, I’d be happy to share our upcoming endeavours. We’re actively working on expanding our presence into new cities, a step that aligns with our growth trajectory. Additionally, I’m excited about the prospect of nurturing young entrepreneurs. This involves a comprehensive approach to mentoring, guiding, and launching them into the industry with a strong foundation. Our goal is to foster a community that thrives on growth, learning, and innovation. By empowering a network of successful entrepreneurs who embody our values and dedication to excellence, we aim to create a positive and lasting impact.

Decision Maker: Could you share some success stories that highlight the personalised approach your company takes?

Ravi Roshan: Certainly, we’ve had some remarkable experiences with our customers that truly embody our personalised approach. For instance, there was a folk artist among our clients who initially sought a conventional kitchen or wardrobe design. However, upon delving deeper into her story, we recognised her unique background and incorporated elements of her folk artistry into her living space. It was a beautiful fusion that brought her artistic identity into her home.

Another inspiring story involves a family consisting of two teenagers and their parents. During our discussions, the wife expressed a specific concern regarding her mother-in-law’s comfort while cooking. Her mother-in-law had physical limitations that made cooking challenging, and she felt disheartened about not being able to contribute to the family meals. We took this as an opportunity to find a solution. Through thoughtful design adjustments and customised kitchen fittings, we were able to create a space where her mother-in-law could comfortably prepare meals, minimising her discomfort. The family was overjoyed with the outcome, particularly the thoughtful consideration given to this small yet significant aspect of their daily lives. These stories truly exemplify the heart of our company’s ethos, which is to make each living space a reflection of the people who inhabit it, incorporating their unique needs and stories.

Decision Maker: List the awards and milestones won by the company.

Ravi Roshan: Sure. In March 2020, we were recognised by Business Sight Magazine as one of the “Best Performing Companies.” Also, Our innovation and excellence were acknowledged when we received the “Most Innovative Company of the Year 2019” award in the E-commerce and Technology category by Maharashtra.

Moreover, the year 2015 was a significant milestone for us as we were honoured with the prestigious title of “The Most Promising Interior Design Company of the Year” by Worldwide Achievers. In addition, in 2015, the Times Group also acknowledged our potential and awarded us “The Best Startups.” A moment of pride came when we were recognised for our Business Innovation as an Emerging Brand by the Asian Leadership Awards on October 7, 2015.

Rimjhim Charaan, COO, 100Krafts

Rimjhim Charaan

Decision Maker: How would you describe your early years and educational background?

Rimjhim Charaan: In my early years, I studied at Delhi Public School and pursued Economic honours at Delhi University’s Miranda House after completing my 12th. Later, I had the opportunity to move to Cyprus, where I pursued an MBA in Finance. While in Cyprus, I worked as an Affiliate Manager in the gaming industry and later for a fintech company.

The online marketing and affiliate marketing space was gaining popularity at that time, and I had the chance to work with companies like Empire Online and www.finotec.com. Additionally, my international exposure allowed me to visit and interact with people from diverse cultures in about 18 different countries, providing me with a unique perspective on design, themes, and aesthetics.

Decision Maker: What was your journey like in 100Krafts, in a nutshell?

Rimjhim Charaan: After moving back to India with my husband Nitin and our two-month-old daughter Lavanya from Cyprus in 2008, we settled in Pune. During this time, I continued to work from home, maintaining online connections with my previous colleagues from Finotec. However, in 2010, after the birth of my second child, Tishya, I felt the desire to return to the workforce.

It was then that I came across 100Krafts, a startup in Bangalore that saw tremendous potential in Pune as well. Though I lacked a formal design background, I decided to take the risk and met with Ravi Roshan, the CEO, and my school friend. Through our discussions, I realised that my skills in management, finance, and customer relationship management (CRM) could be effectively utilised in the interior design industry. I joined 100Krafts, and from that point on, my journey as a COO began, overseeing the bigger picture and leading the team to success.

Decision Maker: How do you approach resource allocation and budget management to ensure projects are delivered on time and within financial targets?

Rimjhim Charaan: Resource allocation and budget management are fundamental to our success in delivering projects on time and within financial targets. We believe in providing our clients with clear and transparent estimates. We present them with detailed breakdowns of the costs for each aspect of the project, including various elements such as wardrobes, tables, beds, and other items.

Moreover, we actively involve our designers and clients in the process, allowing them to add any additional elements they desire to enhance the project’s wow-factor. This approach ensures that our clients are fully aware of the financial aspects and align their expectations accordingly. To streamline the process further, we have a team of experts in quotation, business development, and design, ensuring a seamless experience for our clients and delivering projects efficiently.

Decision Maker: What was your moment of epiphany that set you on this path of what you do today?

Rimjhim Charaan: My moment of epiphany came while I was getting my own house done in Pune back in 2008. I noticed the lack of standardisation and transparency in the interior design industry at that time. The process of finding reliable designers involved numerous phone calls or relying on friends’ recommendations. I decided to get personally involved in the design process and worked closely with the designer to achieve the desired outcome.

It was then that I realised the tremendous potential for a standardised and organised approach in the interior design industry. Along with Ravi Roshan, who shared a similar vision, we recognised the gap and decided to establish 100Krafts, setting us on the path we are on today.

Decision Maker: Did you face any challenges?

Rimjhim Charaan: Absolutely. Being new to the interior design industry and lacking a formal design background posed challenges at the beginning. It was essential to overcome the initial hurdles and adapt quickly to the dynamics of the industry. Hiring skilled team members who shared our vision and mission was another challenge. We discovered that recruiting bright students and experienced professionals worked remarkably well for us.

Additionally, the industry was not entirely organised, and not everyone had the required knowledge to work efficiently. To address this, we established a system focusing on professionalism and customer-centricity, ensuring that all our team members were well-equipped to handle various aspects of our projects.

Decision Maker: What would you consider the most momentous accomplishment of your career?

Rimjhim Charaan: Reflecting on my career, there have been several momentous accomplishments. One of the highlights was when we undertook a significant commercial project in 2017 for a restaurant, spanning 3500 sq. ft. with a budget of 1.2 crore. The project was successfully completed in just 2.5 months, and the customer, a brigadier, continues to stay in touch, expressing satisfaction with our services. This project stands as a testament to our commitment and dedication to delivering quality outcomes in a timely manner.

Additionally, creating a customer-centric system within the interior design industry has been a major milestone for us. Traditionally, the focus has often been on architects and designers. However, at 100Krafts, we shifted the focus to prioritise our customers’ needs and experiences. This shift in approach has revolutionised our work, and clients appreciate the seamless experience we provide.

Also, I’m particularly proud to highlight our role as speakers at a significant AEC industry gathering. Ravi and I were invited in October 2022 to share insights on two crucial topics. Ravi captivated the audience by delving into the ‘Future Trends in the Interior Design Industry,’ offering a glimpse into the evolving landscape. On the other hand, I had the privilege of speaking on a subject close to my heart: ‘Women Empowerment and Leadership.’

Furthermore, I had the privilege of being invited by Goldman Sachs for their 10,000 Women NSRCEL program in 2019. This fully-funded program offered training and mentorship to women entrepreneurs with over 8 years of experience. The program provided valuable insights, upskilling opportunities, and expanded my knowledge in areas such as management and strategy. This recognition was truly an honour and served as a valuable learning experience.

Decision Maker: Who are the people you draw inspiration from—your role models?

Rimjhim Charaan: I draw inspiration from various individuals in different aspects of life. My mother has been a dynamic and strong influence on me. She pursued her Ph.D. while managing multiple responsibilities with great discipline and creativity. Her ability to manage various aspects of life simultaneously, even after retirement, continues to inspire me.

In the business world, I admire leaders like Ratan Tata and Anand Mahindra for their remarkable achievements and unwavering focus on giving back to society. Their approach to leadership and commitment to social responsibility serve as powerful examples.

I also look up to women leaders like Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook (now Meta), and Indra Nooyi, who have excelled in their careers while managing challenges with resilience and determination. Their problem-solving approaches and attitudes towards life resonate with me.

Additionally, I find inspiration from authors and motivational speakers like Robin Sharma. His work has significantly influenced my perspectives on leadership and self-development.

Decision Maker: What is your definition of success?

Rimjhim Charaan: Success, to me, encompasses various aspects of life, each with its own meaning. As a mother, success means instilling the right values in my children and being a positive influence on their lives. As a leader, it means having a clear vision, setting defined goals, and working diligently to achieve them.

Success is not merely about reaching specific milestones, but also about maintaining balance in various spheres of life, including health, spirituality, emotions, and interactions with others. It involves continuous growth and striving to be the best version of myself as a leader, a mother, and a human being.

Having the ability to envision my aspirations and work towards achieving them, while also elevating those around me, is a central aspect of success. Success is like a plateau, supported by multiple pillars representing various facets of life. By nurturing each of these pillars, one can create a stable foundation for success.

Decision Maker: What fuels you to do what you do every day?

Rimjhim Charaan: The dynamic nature of my work and life is a constant source of motivation for me. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities to explore, which keeps me excited and engaged. The prospect of meeting new people, taking on diverse projects, and creating spaces that bring joy and comfort to our clients fuels my passion for interior design.

I find inspiration in the fact that every project we undertake involves creating something unique and special for our clients. As a keen observer, I appreciate the interactions and experiences that come with the job, whether it’s working on finances, meeting clients, delivering projects, or expanding to new cities.

Moreover, I embrace change and innovation, always looking for ways to incorporate technology and elevate our services. The desire to create something extraordinary and make a positive impact on people’s lives keeps me motivated and driven every day.

Decision Maker: The interior design market is constantly evolving. How do you stay informed about industry trends and ensure the company adapts to market changes effectively?

Rimjhim Charaan: Staying informed about industry trends is of utmost importance in the dynamic field of interior design. We utilise various channels to stay updated and adapt to market changes effectively. Social media plays a significant role in keeping us informed about the latest trends, styles, and innovations.

Additionally, we maintain constant communication with suppliers, vendors, and other stakeholders to gain insights into emerging materials and technologies. This enables us to be proactive in incorporating new and trending elements into our designs.

To further ensure we stay on top of industry trends, we conduct regular competitor analysis and actively seek feedback from our clients. This feedback helps us understand their changing preferences and expectations, enabling us to continuously improve our services.

Furthermore, we organise vendor meetings every Wednesday to explore new materials and technologies on the market, both offline and online. This approach helps us identify and embrace emerging trends while providing our clients with the best possible solutions.

Decision Maker: Final words

Rimjhim Charaan: In conclusion, the interior design industry is not merely about creating physical spaces but about crafting experiences for our clients. At 100Krafts, our focus is on understanding the unique needs and aspirations of our clients to design spaces that resonate with their personalities and lifestyles. We have developed a robust customer-centric system that emphasises transparency, professionalism, and seamless project management.

Our goal is to create homes that evoke emotions, cherished memories, and joy for our clients. A house is not just a product or a project but a feeling, and that is precisely what we strive to deliver. By constantly evolving and staying abreast of industry trends, we remain committed to providing our clients with unparalleled experiences and spaces they truly love and appreciate.

My experience spans diverse projects, from corporate spaces to individual homes, each with unique requirements. I even managed projects involving hundreds of clients simultaneously.

Ruchika Bora: Achieving harmony between creativity, practicality, and budget constraints is indeed a challenge, and it’s a skill that comes with experience and patience. We encourage our junior designers to freely explore their creative ideas. My own journey started with a project focused on a children’s bedroom in a 10 BHK bungalow. By intently listening to the preferences of the kids and translating their vision into design elements such as ship-shaped beds and mermaid-themed furniture, I gained their trust and established a foundation for my career. Patience, attentive listening, and thoughtful design solutions are key to achieving this delicate balance.

Decision Maker: How do you ensure effective communication with clients, team members, and stakeholders during the design process?

Ruchika Bora: Open and effective communication is at the core of successful design projects. I take clients’ perspectives and craft visual presentations and ideaboards that illustrate the design direction. Flexibility is crucial, as we adapt to clients’ timelines and even work on weekends to ensure their needs are met. We build trust by showcasing practical solutions, sharing hand sketches, and listening to feedback.

Collaboration with the 3D team and architects becomes essential to translating these concepts into reality. My role also involves managing multiple clients simultaneously, with the support of junior designers, ensuring that each project is aligned with expectations and executed seamlessly. Transparency in communication is maintained through drafting floor plans, coordinating with the accounts team for budget confirmation, and ensuring the entire process remains cohesive and client-focused.

Ar. Ved Nair: Balancing creativity, practicality, and budget constraints is a delicate art, achieved through well-developed knowledge and strategic incorporation of design. To get the same WOW effect on a scale from 1 to 10.

Let me give you an example: The Marble stone, which costs 40k a slab, now has the same look and is available in more than 5 different materials (Laminate, albester, acrylic, quartz, and vitrified tiles) on the market at varying prices.

Decision Maker: How do you ensure smooth communication among clients, team members, and stakeholders throughout the design process?

Ar. Ved Nair: Effective communication is the linchpin of success. Clear communication is essential to preventing any potential roadblocks or misunderstandings. It’s a skill that ensures a cohesive and collaborative approach throughout the design process, preventing any hitches along the way.
